I would appreciate any info on this speaker system. I know very little about it including relative strengths and weaknesses; where it stands in relation to other Altecs of that era. Thanks for any help.

A lovely piece of furniture with A7-8 components, bass reflex loaded, think an Iconic except with the components laid out horizontally, so poor integration between the woofer and horn and a too low vertical sound-stage for critical listening. With a styling change became the Capistrano.

Don't have a clue how rare they are, but it would have to be pretty rare IMO to warrant a price much higher than what the components are worth on Ebay.

GM, what would you think of transfrerring the internals to a set of clone 19 cabs? Probably would actually improve the value...

With rare exception I'm always for DIYing cabs that are either better performing and/or tailored to your room, especially for VOTT components, though with this combo, a better XO is desirable unless you drive them with the type electronics they were voiced with.

WRT the M19s, they're too low profile for me and I don't like the sound of MDF cabs, especially large, minimally braced ones, so the taller one piece variant that Marty did would be a better choice IMO.

Regardless, if keeping these different cabs would be by number one goal. An added RC filter should help out the top.

As you said major value, if that was what the OP was looking at, is the components.

Agreed if a modern architecture amp and/or your hearing is good enough to hear all the HF modern recordings can have.

Thanks for the replies -

The soundstage is pretty bad (very low and directional)and I figured it was due to the cabinets. Original owner (my Dad) bought the second speaker as stereo recordings were becoming available.

How complicated a process to use internals in a different configuration/structure?
